How to connect your Wii to the internet using a wired connection

There are two options available if you wish to connect your Wii to the internet using a wired router. This is via a Wii LAN Adapter or by using a Nintendo USB Wi-Fi Connector.

Connecting using a Wii LAN Adapter

You can connect your Wii using a Wii LAN Adapter. Other USB LAN adapters will not work with your Wii.

To connect, go to the Wii Menu, then do the following:

  1. Click the ‘Wii’ button in the bottom left corner
  2. Select ‘Wii SETTINGS’
  3. Use the directional arrows to get to the second screen, then select ‘INTERNET’
  4. Press ‘CONNECTION SETTINGS’, then select a connection that it not in use
  5. Select ‘WIRED CONNECTION’.

Connecting to the internet using a Nintendo USB Wi-Fi Connector
You can connect your Wii using a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector. However, you will need to install it on a desktop computer or laptop first.

  1. To install your Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, insert the CD-ROM provided into your desktop or laptop. When the USB Connector setup window appears, click OK to begin the installation process.

If the setup window doesn't appear, click the 'Start' button, choose 'Run', then click on the 'Browse' button. Click on the CD drive that the setup disc is in, then locate the Setup.EXE file and double-click it.

  2. Select the language, then click OK and the software will begin to install.

Note: If you receive the error, "You are not connected to the internet", this means that the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is not able to detect an active internet connection. If you are using a laptop computer with Wi-Fi access, you must first connect to the internet before you can finish setup.

  3. When directed, insert the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector into any open USB slot on the PC. USB ports attached to a monitor or keyboard will not work.

If the warning, "Hi-speed USB device plugged into non-hi-speed USB hub" appears, click OK. This just means the USB port is an older 1.1 USB port version.

  4. Make sure the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is attached to the PC, then click on the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector Registration Tool icon in the lower-right corner of the Windows XP or Windows Vista task bar.

  5. Once the software is installed, you must register your Wii console using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connector Registration Tool.

To then connect your Wii to the internet, go to the Wii Menu, then do the following:

  6. Select 'Next' on the Wii console to continue
  7. Go back to your PC. In the Windows XP or Windows Vista registration tool, the Nintendo Wii's nickname will appear. There will be a small, yellow "?" next to it
  8. Click on the Nintendo Wii's nickname and select 'GRANT PERMISSION TO CONNECT'

  9. A blue, standing man icon will appear next to the Wii's nickname. The Wii console will now have permission to connect to the USB connector
  10. After you have established a connection with your PC, click ‘NEXT’, then select 'OK' to test the connection.
