Save Game Backup for Downloaded Games

What is the Save Data Backup Function?

Save-Data Backup Feature Overview

The Save-Data Backup feature allows you to back up save data from downloadable Nintendo 3DS software and most Virtual Console games.

Creating a backup of save data will allow you to delete software off of your SD card without losing your save data.

The backup you create will then be automatically restored when you re-download software from Nintendo eShop.

You can also restore backup save data from the System Settings.

Important notes: 

  • System menu version 6.0.0-0E or higher is required to use the Save-Data Backup feature. If you require assistance updating your system, click here
  • Only delete Software from your SD Card using Data Management in the System Settings, Do Not modify or delete any data in the SD Card’s files.
  • You can create a total of 30 save data backups.
  • Backups of save data are stored on the SD card inserted into your Nintendo 3DS.
  • The backup save data and software must be on the same SD card when restoring save data.
  • You cannot back up save data from retail versions of Nintendo 3DS software, DSiWare, and GameBoy Advance software. 

How Do I Backup Save Data?

  • You cannot back up save data from retail versions of Nintendo 3DS software, DSiWare, and GameBoy Advance software.
  • You can create a total of 30 save data backups.
  • Backups of save data are stored on the SD card inserted into your Nintendo 3DS.

 

What To Do:

You can back up save data from the HOME Menu or when deleting downloaded software.

To back up save data from the HOME Menu:

  1. Tap on the software with the save data you wish to back up.
  2. Tap the triangle icon, located in the bottom left corner.
    If the triangle is not displayed, this indicates you cannot back up this software's save data from the HOME Menu
  3. Select "Save-Data Backup."
  4. Tap “Create”

Your Save Data will be backed up onto the SD Card and you will now be able to safely delete this Software with peace of mind that you can keep your hard earned Save Data.

You will also be given the option to back up your Save Data when deleting any software that supports this function, for more information on this please see Data Management.

How Do I Restore Save Data

 Important Notes:

  • Only previously backed up save data can be restored. [How to]
  • Current save data will be overwritten when backup save data is restored.
  • The save data and software must be on the same SD card when you restore save data.

What To Do: 

Previously backed up save data is automatically restored when re-downloading software from Nintendo eShop.

You can also restore save data using the Save-Data Backup option within Data Management.

To restore save data using the Save-Data Backup option:

  • From the HOME Menu, tap "System Settings," and then "Open."
  • Tap "Data Management."
  • Tap "Nintendo 3DS," and then tap "Save-Data Backup."
  • Tap “Restore”
  • Select the Save Data you wish to restore and tap “Ok”

 

Which games do not support the Save Data Backup?

 

The following software does not support the ability to back up save data from the HOME Menu:

  • Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive!
  • Dillon's Rolling Western
  • Pokémon Rumble Blast
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Pokémon Dream Radar
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
